Weather and Pests Problems: How Are They Related?

Pests will always be looking for two things: food and shelter, no matter what season it is. Your home is one place that offers both of these!

These crawlers are affected by the seasons. Thus their risks shift as the weather does. They also evolve in their life cycles according to seasons. It is critical to understand seasonal pest patterns in your area to make appropriate home precautions.

What should you expect when the seasons vary throughout the year?

Fall

Most pests spend the fall preparing for the hard winter months. Box elders, ladybugs, and spiders are common fall pests. At this time of year, these pests will frequently attack your home in quest of sanctuary for the coming months.

This is also an excellent time to prepare your home for overwintering pests like rodents and roaches that seek shelter from the winter weather. There are steps you can do year-round to safeguard your home from pests, regardless of the season.

Winter

Pests hibernate and try to survive over the winter. Most bugs seek shelter in colder weather. Others seek protection indoors, while some seek shelter outside. Wasps,  bees, and other stinging insects will look for shelter in logs or under your house’s eaves. As for ants, they seek refuge in their nests.

Overwintering pests such as spiders, cockroaches, and rats will seek shelter indoors, including our homes. The key to preventing these winter pests is to prepare your home in the fall.

Spring

Ants will flee their nesting grounds in search of higher land as the spring rains arrive. The start of the swarming season for termites is also marked by the arrival of spring. In the spring, most pests will emerge from their burrows for mating.

The spring rains will drive ants from their nesting sites in search of higher ground. Spring also marks the beginning of the swarming season for termites. Most pests will move outdoors in the spring in search of mates.

Summer

Summer is the peak season for backyard bugs, which put a damper on our outdoor activities. While there are fewer bugs inside our houses, there are more pests in our yards and other outdoor spaces.

Mosquitoes are most active throughout the summer months due to summer rainfalls and the moisture from spring. Wasps, bees, and other stinging insects are also more active in the summer, and their nests are frequently located on or near our dwellings.

Rain and Humidity

Pests thrive and multiply under the rainy season and increased humidity. This can lead to significant pest populations seeking food from other sources to feed more mouths.

For example, ants making lines along your walls or foraging in your kitchen may indicate an ant infestation. While the majority of ants are considered nuisance pests, they can be tough to exterminate with do-it-yourself methods and sprays.

Termites, which are classified as destructive pests, can also infiltrate homes where there is moist and rotting wood or wood-to-ground contact. Termites should be treated as soon as you detect termite activity in your house by a pest control specialist such as Pest Control Toms River or any trustworthy and trusted pest control company in your area.

Storms can also result in large increases in pest populations since there is more water and dead and decaying plant material to feed on.
