Wedding rings are an embodiment of commitment and love, indicating that the person wearing it is either engaged or married. A wedding ring can feature diamonds or any other gemstones. Although diamonds are the first choice for a wedding ring, it dates back in time as to why diamonds are a popular choice for most wedding rings.

What made the diamond ring so popular?

  Diamond Engagement Ring, The Source:

We have to go back about 75 years. In the 1940s, De Beers began a brilliant advertising campaign that equated love with diamonds. This gave rise to the modern era diamond engagement ring tradition. History is actually quite strong.

A diamond engagement ring is a sign of love, faith, loyalty and togetherness, something that shows a person is committed towards the relationship. The ring is just a special gift for the partner and shows the expense that you have invested for a future together.

Engagements were not always as glamorous as they are today:

The tradition of exchanging wedding rings dates back to ancient Egypt about 4,800 years later. But then, the rings were made with stuff like braided papyrus and reeds. The endless circle was the eternal symbol and the hole was the entrance to the future. This simple exchange of ring was a true symbol of love and compassion.

When Austria’s Archduke Maximilian asked Mary of Burgundy to marry him, the first diamond engagement ring was used in around 1477. The diamonds were in an “M” shape and were very thin and delicate. At that time, diamonds were expensive even for the European aristocracy.  Archduke Maximilian drowned in debts. At the cessation of his reign, he owed 10 years worth of income to be paid as debts.

Popularity of Diamond Rings, When it started:

Diamonds were once very rare and expensive however there is an alternate affordable  choice of moissanite ring . In the year 1870, huge diamond resources were discovered in South Africa. Diamonds were no longer a rarity. Everyone could own their own diamond if they wanted. Like anything in business, that was not a very good thing. The British traders who operated the mines had a clever idea. They maintained the idea that diamonds were scarce. This meant that they can raise the price of diamonds as and how they desired.

Diamonds are forever:

Diamonds was considered to be the only way to show your love and affection to a woman. In the early days, a woman measured a man’s love based on the size of the diamond. American women also have diamond rings as an insurance.

Around the time of 1940s, the United States repealed the breach of marriage law. This caused more women to demand for diamond rings. The law allowed women to sue her fiancée who has broken up their marriage. Since in the 1930s, engagements were still largely mere verbal promises, this law was made to protect women if the marriage was broken off.  Once the Breach of Promise law started dissipating, a verbal promise just was not good enough anymore. Now, women needed some other form of reassurance. A diamond ring made the perfect insurance. Men would spend quite a good amount of money to buy it, so it was less likely for a man to break off the engagement, and even if he did, the potential bride would have something as a compensation for the broken marriage.

The meaning of the Engagement Ring today: Today, the engagement ring reflects and portrays a symbol of love and commitment. It is the promise of marriage between a man and a woman. It shows that the person is serious enough about the relationship to save up for the ring.  It shows and reflects the sense of togetherness and a long- term commitment.  Today, women have their own careers, so engagement rings are now less about insurance and more about the symbol of love. When it comes to wedding rings, for any other ring for that matter, diamonds hold a special place in the hearts of the ones planning to buy the piece of ornament simply because the importance of owning a diamond has been passed down from ancient times. No other gem can radiate the essence of royalty and nobility and queenship nearly as much as diamond does.
