To drive a four-wheeler or two-wheeler on Indian roads, having a driving licence is compulsory. The Motor Vehicles Act issued in 1988 has made it compulsory for an individual to possess a driving licence to drive his vehicle in India’s public areas freely.
The rule is also applicable in the Indian state of Kerala that doesn’t permit an individual to drive a vehicle without holding a valid driver’s licence. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) of Kerala is entrusted with issuing a driving licence to its citizens.
The RTO office is also responsible for providing other driving-related services such as the issuance of an International driving licence, renewal of driver’s licence, etc. In Kerala, driver’s licences are issued by 17 regional and 42 sub-regional transportation offices.
